Maggie Valley Club & Resort: A Rich Heritage

Now nationally recognized as a world-class golf resort known for its Southern hospitality, Maggie Valley Club & Resort wasn’t always the sophisticated destination it is today.

In the 1800s, what is now Maggie Valley Club & Resort was the homestead of Sentelle and Mary Francis Moody. Long before a golf course existed, the land was used for farming. In a gesture of hospitality that the farm would later become known for, the Moody family generously opened their home to those willing to work the land. In exchange for the farming, the Moodys provided room, board and education to their residents. As those residents shared stories of their lives with relatives and friends, the Moody Farm began to grow a reputation for the quality home-cooking and gentle hospitality they provided.

When visitors to the area were looking for somewhere to stay, the Moody Farm was one of their first stops. As their home filled, the Moodys converted small cabins on their grounds into guest cottages; and so western North Carolina’s tourism trade began!

mvc1By the 1960s, golf resorts were becoming very popular. An ambitious man named Wilmore Brenner gathered the support of a group of investors to purchase a significant portion of the Moody Farm, including the tobacco and cornfields of the farm’s front bottomland. This land became the front nine holes of the Maggie Valley Club & Resort’s golf course, now known as the Valley Nine. After a painstaking transformation that required the fairways to be sewn by hand three times, the first Maggie Valley Country Club golfers christened the course late in the summer of 1963.

As the surrounding areas developed, the demand for homes along the course grew, and later, a second set of nine holes were added. This set became known as the Mountain Nine, a section of the course renowned for its views.

Today, Maggie Valley Club & Resort sits on the same land that was once home to Mary Francis and Sentelle Moody, and we like to think that they’d applaud our vision. While we offer guests every amenity, we’ve never forgotten the spirit of true Southern hospitality that began with the Moody Farm.

Springtime Hiking and Wildlife in Western North Carolina

Spring’s moderate temperatures and blossoming flowers make it a perfect time of year to go hiking in the scenic areas surrounding Maggie Valley Club & Resort. For a change of pace from the golf course, check out these popular hiking and wildlife viewing spots:

* Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Oconaluftee Visitors Center entrance in Cherokee, NC is an easy 30 minute drive from Maggie Valley. Once there, you’ll find hundreds of miles of hiking trails. The park itself is over 800 square miles, so many visitors like to drive and see the scenery in addition to hiking. Whether you’d like to see waterfalls, wildlife or amazing views, there’s a route for you. Throughout the park there are also historic farm sites, gristmills, churches and schools. The Maggie Valley Club & Resort Activities Director will have maps and information about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park available and can help you plan your visit.

* Elk Viewing at Cataloochee Valley

This is actually a side entrance to the Smoky Mountain National Park known as a prime spot for elk watching. You’ll have to plan your visit around the herd’s grazing schedule, because the elk won’t wait around for you when they’re through! This spot offers a terrific view of the open fields where the elk herds tend to graze at sunrise and sunset throughout the year. Elk have been in the Park since 2001when an initial herd of only 21 was introduced to the area. That herd thrived, and they’re closely monitored via radio collars. Don’t try to get too close though- it’s actually illegal to come any closer than 150 feet from the elk (as well as bears and other Park wildlife). Once the elk have moved on, there are many hiking trails surrounding their grazing areafor you to explore.

* Lake Junaluska

Lake Junaluska, located in Waynesville, is only a 5 minute drive from Maggie Valley Club & Resort. The Lake, with its beautiful landscaping, butterfly gardens and quaint gazebos, is beautiful in the springtime and features 2 walking trails, one that logs 2.6 miles, and a slightly longer trail of 3.7 miles. Both loop around the lake, and provide an easy walk with plenty to see.

If you have questions about hiking or other activities, see the Director of Activities at Maggie Valley Club & Resort. She is an area expert and will be happy to discuss your options with you.

Don’t miss your chance to enjoy our all-you-can-eat Prime Rib and Calabash Seafood Buffet! Several times a month, our Chef plans special dining events to shake it up a little bit at the Pin High Bar and Grille. In April, we’ve featured a sushi night as well as the Prime Rib and Calabash Seafood Buffet. Both have been huge hits!

After the first Prime Rib & Calabash Seafood Buffet featuring live music with Randy Beaumont, the happy customers had a chance to spread the word and reservations started coming in fast and furious. Since we’ve had much success, we will be hosting the buffet in May and June.  See the Calendar of Events on our website for more information.

The Chef whips up something special every time. The menu features all-you-can-eat Prime Rib and a host of seafood dishes, all served Calabash style. While most locals will be familiar with the term, some might need a bit of explanation. Calabash refers to a small fishing town in North Carolina known primarily for its seafood restaurants. Those restaurants are known to serve very, very fresh fish, often in large portions, that’s fired in a very light batter with few spices, allowing the fresh flavor of the seafood to shine through.

At our Calabash style Seafood buffet, guests will be able to select from overflowing platters of Peel and Eat Shrimp, Popcorn Shrimp, Clam Strips, Calamari and flak, tender Flounder. Traditional sides include Hush-Puppies, Fried Okra, Coleslaw, Garden Salad and Baked Potatoes. Of course, we’ll also be adding a bountiful selection of assorted desserts, so you can end your evening on a sweet note.

Seats fill up quickly, so make your reservations today!

CIMG1042Most members and visitors to Maggie Valley Club have one thing that they all agree on….the gardens are spectacular.  Maggie Valley Club landscaping supervisor, Gwen Norris, and her crew are famous in the area for absolutely gorgeous gardens throughout the property.

Gwen and her crew are not only responsible for the gardens around the golf course and clubhouse, but also all the gardens around the Persimmon Point Condominiums, the mountain Cottages and the rest of the grounds throughout the club.

Maggie Valley Club members and guests are treated to beauty on a year round basis.  Even before the frost has left the ground, beautiful bulb flowers peek their way up throughout the club.  Throughout the spring and summer months, the profusion of flowers is a treat to see every day.

CIMG1047Gwen’s gardens are so wonderful because she not only picks flowers and plants that are full of color, but she only picks plants that do well in the climate of the Smoky Mountains.  There is even a special “Appalachian Flowers” garden along the Persimmon Trail in front of Building D.

If you haven’t been out to the club lately… or haven’t taken the time to ‘stop and smell the roses’ on your way to the fitness center…. come on by and enjoy the beauty!

Aerification at Maggie Valley Club

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (1 votes, average: 2.00 out of 5)

Aerification PhotoAerification is an extremely important maintenance practice on a golf course. Although it results in a temporary disruption of the green, aerification improves water penetration into the soil, reduces soil compaction, stimulates turfgrass root growth for a healthier plant, helps control thatch build-up, and improves overall growing conditions. Aeration generally is done once or twice per year, and sometimes more often if certain problems exist (such as #16, putting green & chipping green).
Think of it as going to the dentist for your twice-yearly check-up. The same holds true for aeration. You can skip a visit to the dentist, but you will contribute to problems over the long term. If you skip one of the semi-annual aerations, this can result in faster turf loss during the stressful summer months.
Oxygen is one of the most important elements to growing fine sports turf. Just like the human body, turf and soil need oxygen to thrive & survive.

This fall we will be using a 3/8”x5” (depth) quad-tine. This will allow us to remove more thatch & organic matter from the canopy without using a larger tine, which in return can cause the inconvenience and a disruption in play. Following the aerification process we will top-dress with straight sand, apply soil amendments & fertilizers, brush and mow & roll. We will also be using an Aerification Recovery Program 3 days prior & 3 days after. We hope to see a quick recovery in at least 5 days.
