February’s weekly specials are in full swing at the Pin High Bar & Grille, where you can now make reservations for our February 11th Sushi Night. This Thursday only, Chef Keith takes on Japan’s classic cuisine and offers a variety of hand-rolled sushi, in addition to the regular Pin High menu. From classic favorites to more inventive creations, the Sushi Night menu features something for everyone, with a variety of cooked and traditional starters, sushi, and chirashi.

Choose from the delectable crab Rangoon or the Chef’s selection of sashimi, among other options, before selecting from a variety of 8-piece rolls like the Tuna Tempura Roll, Philly Roll and Spyder Roll. If maki and nigri rolls aren’t up your alley, chirashi might be just right. Though not as well known as sashimi or hand-rolls, chirashi is a popular Japanese dish that features scattered sushi toppings in a bowl of rice. Pin High will be offering several chirashi selections, including a fully-cooked Tempura Soft-Shell Crab chirashi. Keeping with the night’s theme, a cold and warm sake menu will also be available.

Reservations are recommended. Please call (828) 926-4848 to reserve your table.

Aerification at Maggie Valley Club

Aerification PhotoAerification is an extremely important maintenance practice on a golf course. Although it results in a temporary disruption of the green, aerification improves water penetration into the soil, reduces soil compaction, stimulates turfgrass root growth for a healthier plant, helps control thatch build-up, and improves overall growing conditions. Aeration generally is done once or twice per year, and sometimes more often if certain problems exist (such as #16, putting green & chipping green).
Think of it as going to the dentist for your twice-yearly check-up. The same holds true for aeration. You can skip a visit to the dentist, but you will contribute to problems over the long term. If you skip one of the semi-annual aerations, this can result in faster turf loss during the stressful summer months.
Oxygen is one of the most important elements to growing fine sports turf. Just like the human body, turf and soil need oxygen to thrive & survive.

This fall we will be using a 3/8”x5” (depth) quad-tine. This will allow us to remove more thatch & organic matter from the canopy without using a larger tine, which in return can cause the inconvenience and a disruption in play. Following the aerification process we will top-dress with straight sand, apply soil amendments & fertilizers, brush and mow & roll. We will also be using an Aerification Recovery Program 3 days prior & 3 days after. We hope to see a quick recovery in at least 5 days.

CIMG1042Most members and visitors to Maggie Valley Club have one thing that they all agree on….the gardens are spectacular.  Maggie Valley Club landscaping supervisor, Gwen Norris, and her crew are famous in the area for absolutely gorgeous gardens throughout the property.

Gwen and her crew are not only responsible for the gardens around the golf course and clubhouse, but also all the gardens around the Persimmon Point Condominiums, the mountain Cottages and the rest of the grounds throughout the club.

Maggie Valley Club members and guests are treated to beauty on a year round basis.  Even before the frost has left the ground, beautiful bulb flowers peek their way up throughout the club.  Throughout the spring and summer months, the profusion of flowers is a treat to see every day.

CIMG1047Gwen’s gardens are so wonderful because she not only picks flowers and plants that are full of color, but she only picks plants that do well in the climate of the Smoky Mountains.  There is even a special “Appalachian Flowers” garden along the Persimmon Trail in front of Building D.

If you haven’t been out to the club lately… or haven’t taken the time to ‘stop and smell the roses’ on your way to the fitness center…. come on by and enjoy the beauty!

Maggie Valley Club hiking at Max PatchIf you haven’t been coming out on the MVC sponsored hikes around the area, then you are missing out!

This free activity is both fun and great exercise!  Once or twice a month, we head out to a beautiful part of the community you live in and enjoy the day hiking to hilltops, waterfalls and even to see elk!

Kristin Moro, the MVC Activities Coordinator, is also a certified Wildlife Ecologist.  Her former work with the Audubon Society means she can give highlights about the nature you’re hiking through.  “What’s that purple flower?”  A mountain violet!  “Is that poison ivy?” Yes, don’t touch it!  ‘What exactly IS a lichen?”  A mix of green algae and a fungus!

On some of the hikes, we enjoy lunch at the half-way point, or at the top of the trail.  Deanna Cruz always brings out a big bag of cherries that are quite a hit!

Maggie Valley Club Hiking at the Emerald Pools on Big CreekThese hikes are generally rated easy or moderate, something most people can do and enjoy without feeling completely worn out.  I wouldn’t hike a trail rated “difficult” myself, and since I’m the leader, you won’t have to either!

Don’t miss out on this fun, and free activity with your friends and fellow members.  See you on the trail!

Check out the Maggie Valley Club activities calendar for more information!

The “Dog” Days of Summer at Maggie Valley Club

IMG_0300Believe it or not, condo and mountain home living here in the Maggie Valley area can have its disadvantages.  Yes, you’re practically next door to great hiking, babbling brooks and wildflower-filled forests. The weather is almost perfect here year-round, and the view of the mountains off your front porch makes your friends in other states pea-green with envy. However, your canine family member doesn’t always appreciate the view.

A lot of homes don’t have fenced-in areas where you can let Spot and Rover off-leash to run around and play.  What they want is to come to our DOG PLAYDATES at Maggie Valley Club!IMG_0301

Meet other members that love their dogs like you do. Let Fido run off leash to his heart’s delight!  We have balls, Frisbees, kiddie pools, and other play equipment that will keep your dog’s tail a waggin’ for hours!!!

Recently, we had six fantastic pooch pals fighting for the cuteness prize up at our poolside activities lawn. Nip and Tuck McClimans, the Bichon Frise twins, were hamming it up as they romped around the yard.  Pepper Holden, an adorable Yorkie, is apparently chugging down Red Bulls when mom isn’t looking.  This little 5 pound ball of energy chased balls and frisbees he didn’t possibly stand a chance of catching for over an hour!IMG_0307

If you have a canine companion who is your favorite furry family member, bring them out to the Dog Playdates every other Thursday at Maggie Valley Club!  We meet up at the Poolside Activities Lawn at 2:30 pm.

SEE YOU THERE!
